Lords debates future relationship with European Union

Members of the Lords, including a former head of the UK Diplomatic Service and a professor emeritus at the London School of Economics, debated the best options for the UK’s future relationship with the EU following the referendum vote to leave, in the House of Lords on Thursday 1 December.

This was a general debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.
The debate was proposed by Lord Liddle (Labour), former principal advisor to the president of the European Commission.

- Lord Jay of Ewelme (Crossbench), former ambassador to France and former head of the UK Diplomatic Service

- Baroness Smith of Newnham (Liberal Democrat), member of the European Policy Forum Advisory Council
Lord Ricketts (Crossbench), former ambassador to France, gave his maiden speech.
Baroness Anelay of St Johns (Conservative), minister of state in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, responded on behalf of the government.
