Lords debates social care reform

Members of the Lords, including the chairs of the Social Care Institute For Excellence and the Specialised Healthcare Alliance, debated the challenges in the current system of social care and proposals for reviewing it and for longer-term reform of the system, in the House of Lords on Thursday 1 December.

This was a general debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Baroness Pitkeathley (Labour), former chief executive of Carers UK

Members taking part included:

  • Baroness Browning (Conservative), vice-president of the Alzheimer's Society and the National Autistic Society
  • Baroness Walmsley (Liberal Democrat), health spokesperson and former researcher at Christie Hospital, Manchester
  • Baroness Wheeler (Labour), chair of the Specialised Healthcare Alliance

Baroness Cavendish of Little Venice (Conservative), gave her maiden speech.

Lord Prior of Brampton (Conservative), parliamentary under-secretary in the Department of Health, responded on behalf of the government.
