This week in the House of Commons, MPs debated the Technical and Further Education Bill, the Investigatory Powers Bill, ESA and universal credit, social care and more.

Legislation: Government Bills

Technical and Further Education Bill

The Technical and Further Education Bill had its second reading in the Commons on Monday 14 November and has been sent to Public Bill Committee for detailed examination and evidence gathering.

Investigatory Powers Bill

On Tuesday 15 November, the Commons considered Lords Amendments to the Investigatory Powers Bill. The Commons insisted on its disagreement with Lords Amendments 15b, 15c, 338b, 339b, 339c and proposed amendments in lieu. 

The Bill returned to the House of Lords. Both Houses have agreed on the text of the bill, which now waits for Royal Assent when it will become an Act of Parliament (law).

Small Charitable Donations and Childcare Payments Bill

MPs debated the Report stage and Third Reading of the Small Charitable Donations and Childcare Payments Bill in the House of Commons on Tuesday 15 November 2016.

The Bill passed it's Third Reading and went for its first reading in the House of Lords.

Legislation: Private Members Bills

Two Private Members Bills were introduced to the House following Ten Minute Rule Motions this week:

On Friday 18 Novembers MPs debated the Parliamentary Constituencies (Amendment) Bill. The Bill passed its second reading and progresses to the Committee stage. The Disability Equality Training (Taxi and Private Hire Car Vehicles) started its second reading debate but was adjourned. The debate is expected to resume on 25 November 2016.

Opposition day debates

On Wednesday 16 November,  MPs debated universal credit and employment and support allowance in the House of Commons, in the first of two debates to take place on subjects chosen by the Opposition. The second Opposition debate was on social care.

E-petitions debates

On  in the Westminster Hall Chamber, MPs debated an e-petition on the status of police dogs and horses. 

Backbench business debates

On Thursday 17 November in the Commons Chamber, MPs took part in two general debates which had been schedules by the Backbench Business Committee.

Westminster Hall debates
