This week in the Commons, MPs debated the Higher Education and Research Bill, education and social mobility, NHS funding and more.
Legislation: Government Bills
Higher Education and Research Bill
MPs debated the Report Stage and Third Reading of the Higher Education and Research Bill. The Bill passed its Third Reading and is currently being considered in the House of Lords.
Legislation: Private Members' Bills
Two Private Members' Bills were introduced to the House following Ten Minute Rule Motions this week:
On Friday 25 November, MPs debated the Awards for Valour (Protection) Bill. The Bill passed its Second Reading and progresses to Committee Stage.
MPs also debated the Parking Places (Variation of Charges) Bill which passed its Second Reading and progresses to Committee Stage.
The Local Audit (Public Access to Documents) Bill also passed its Second Reading and progresses to Committee Stage.
Urgent Questions and Statements
This week Urgent Questions were asked on:
- Parliament news: Independent Inquiry in Child Sexual Abuse
- Parliament news: HMIC review Metropolitan Police handling of child sexual abuse cases
The Chancellor delivered the Autumn Statement this week.
Prime Minister's Questions
On Wednesday 23 November, MPs asked the Prime Minister questions about investment in the road network, police officer safety and more.

Opposition day debates
On Tuesday 22 November, MPs debated education and social mobility in the House of Commons, in the first of two debates to take place on subjects chosen by the the Opposition. The second Opposition debate was on National Health Service funding.
E-petitions debates
On Monday 21 November in the Westminster Hall Chamber, MPs debated an e-petition on free childcare.
Backbench business debates
On Thursday 24 November in the Commons Chamber, MPs took part in two general debates which had been schedules by the Backbench Business Committee.
