Lords debates environment and climate change

Members of the Lords, including a former professor of climate modelling at University College London and a former MEP, debated the future of environmental and climate change policy in the light of the result of the referendum for the withdrawal of the UK from the European Union, in the House of Lords on Thursday 20 October.

This was a general debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Baroness Parminter (Liberal Democrat),  Lords principal spokesperson for environment, food and rural affairs.

Members taking part included:

  • Lord Hunt of Chesterton (Labour), former professor of climate modelling, University College London
  • Earl of Selborne (Conservative), former president of the Royal Geographical Society
  • Lord Teverson (Liberal Democrat), former MEP and former chair of the Rural Coalition

Lord Gardiner of Kimble (Conservative), parliamentary under-secretary, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, responded on behalf of the government.
