Members of the Lords, including a member of the Advisory Council of the European Policy Forum and a former vice-president of the European Commission, debated the opportunities presented by the UK's vote to leave the EU for the promotion of global free trade, and the impact on domestic and international trade, in the House of Lords on Thursday 27 October.

This was a general debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Lord Leigh of Hurley (Conservative), member of the Lords Finance Committee.

Members taking part included:

  • Lord Haskel (Labour), former member of the Lords EU Sub-Committee on the Internal Market
  • Baroness Smith of Newnham (Liberal Democrat), member of the Advisory Council of the European Policy Forum
  • Lord Tugendhat (Conservative), former vice-president of the European Commission

Lord Gadhia (Conservative), director of UK Financial Investments Ltd, made his maiden speech.

Baroness Mobarik (Conservative), responded on behalf of the government.
