Timetable for election of five select committee chairs announced

The Speaker of the Commons has announced the timetable for the election of five select committee chairs. Two committees have been created to scrutinise the newly established departments for Exiting the EU and International Trade. Chairs for those committees will be elected for the first time. The positions of chair for the Culture, Media and Sport, Home Affairs, and Science and Technology committees are also up for election.
Select committee chairs are allocated according to party and elected by the whole House of Commons. Candidates require 15 signatures from their own party to be nominated (with the exception of SNP candidates, who require 6 signatures). The relevant committee websites will be updated daily as nominations are received.
The chair positions have been allocated to the following parties:
- Culture, Media and Sport - Conservative
- Exiting the EU - Labour
- Home Affairs - Labour
- International Trade - SNP
- Science and Technology - Conservative
Nominations open Tuesday 11 October and close on Tuesday 18 October at 12 noon.
Elections take place on Wednesday 19 October, with the ballot open between 10am and 1.30pm. Members vote for candidates by order of preference, using the Alternative Vote system. The Speaker will announce the result in the Chamber that afternoon.
