Lords discusses nursing bursaries

Members of the House of Lords will discuss proposed changes to regulations on financial support for students of nursing, midwifery and health professionals on 27 April 2017.

Lord Clark of Windermere (Labour) will propose a motion to regret that the regulations pave the way for switching from bursaries to loans for healthcare students.
If agreed, this motion would not stop the regulations, which came into force in March 2017, but would provide an opportunity for the House to put on record its regret that the government has made the change.
About the Education (Student Fees, Awards and Support) (Amendment) Regulations 2017
The regulations would put in place arrangements to allow healthcare students in England to draw on loan-based support systems once NHS bursaries have been withdrawn by the Department of Health (DH).
They would also make changes to the amount of support for tuition, living and other costs for students taking designated healthcare courses in higher education.

These regulations are subject to the negative procedure, meaning that they would not normally be debated unless a member objects by putting down a motion. These regulations were laid on 9 February 2017 and the motion will be debated on Thursday 27 April.
