Members of the Lords, including a minister of state in the Department for International Trade and the co-chair of the International Tax and Investment Center, debated the future of United Kingdom trade and customs policy in the light of HM Government’s white papers 'Preparing for our future UK trade policy' and 'Customs Bill: legislating for the UK’s future customs', in the House of Lords on Tuesday 5 December.

This was a general debate. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Baroness Fairhead (Conservative), minister of state in the Department for International Trade, who also responded on behalf of the government.

Members taking part included:

  • Lord Horam (Conservative), non-executive director of business consultancy CRU International Ltd
  • Baroness Kramer (Liberal Democrat), former vice-president of Citibank/Citicorp USA
  • Lord Liddle (Labour), former member of the trade commissioner's cabinet in the European Commission
  • Viscount Waverley (Crossbench), co-chair of the International Tax and Investment Center
