Private Members’ Bills

Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (Ratification of Convention) Bill: Remaining Stages

This Bill, sponsored by Dr Eilidh Whiteford, aims to require the United Kingdom to ratify the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (the Istanbul Convention); and for connected purposes.

The Third Reading of the Bill was passed following a vote of 138 to 1. The Bill now progresses to the House of Lords

Awards for Valour (Protection) Bill: Remaining Stages

This Bill, sponsored by Gareth Johnson, aims to prohibit the wearing of medals or insignia awarded for valour, with the intent to deceive.

The Report stage debate was adjourned and is expected to resume on 24 March 2017.

Rescheduled Private Member's Bills

Merchant Shipping (Homosexual Conduct) Bill: Remaining Stages

This Bill, sponsored by John Glen, aims to repeal sections 146(4) and 147(3) of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994.

The Remaining stages of this Bill have been rescheduled for Friday 24 March 2017.

Guardianship (Missing Persons) Bill: Remaining Stages

This Bill, sponsored by Kevin Hollinrake, aims to make provision about the property and affairs of missing persons; and for connected purposes.

The Remaining stages of this Bill have been rescheduled for Friday 24 March 2017.

Kew Gardens (Leases) Bill: Remaining Stages

This Bill, sponsored by Mr Ian Liddell-Grainger, aims to provide that the Secretary of State’s powers in relation to the management of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, include the power to grant a lease in respect of land for a period of up to 150 years.

The Remaining stages of this Bill have been rescheduled for Friday 24 March 2017.

Private Members' Bills are Public Bills introduced by MPs and Lords who are not government ministers.

As with other Public Bills, their purpose is to change the law as it applies to the general population.

A minority of Private Members' Bills become law but, by creating publicity around an issue, they may affect legislation indirectly.
