Lords private members' bills
27 February 2017
The House of Lords debated four private members' bills on Friday 24 February covering homelessness, car parking, radio broadcasting and abortion.
A private member's bill is a type of public bill (that affects the public). Three of these bills started in the House of Commons. Private members' bills must go through the same set of procedures as other public bills.
Homelessness Reduction Bill (second reading)

- What is second reading?
A bill to reduce homelessness with early intervention and reasonable steps to help secure accommodation by local authorities.
Committee stage, the first chance for line by line scrutiny, is yet to be scheduled.

Following agreement by both Houses on the text of the bill it received Royal Assent on 27 April 2017. Royal Assent is the monarch's agreement to make the bill into an Act of Parliament (law).
Broadcasting (Radio Multiplex Services) Bill (second reading)

- What is second reading?
A bill to enable community radio stations in the UK to broadcast on the Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) radio platform.

- What is report stage?
A bill to make provision for disability equality in respect of abortions.
One amendment was discussed in this day’s report stage. Eight more amendments are due to be discussed. The second day of report stage is yet to be scheduled.
The 2016-2017 session of Parliament ended on 27 April 2017 and this bill will make no further progress.
