This week in the Commons, MPs debated the National Citizen Service Bill, exiting the EU and security, law enforcement and criminal justice and more.

Legislation: Government Bills

National Citizen Service Bill

The Bill had its Second Reading and has now been committed to a Public Bill Committee.

Legislation: Private Members' Bill

Two Private Members' Bills were introduced to the House following Ten Minute Rule Motions this week.

On Friday 20 January, MPs debated the Merchant Shipping (Homosexual Conduct) Bill. The Bill passed Second Reading and progresses to Committee stage.

The Second Reading debate of the Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (Statutory Requirement) Bill also took place. This Bill was adjourned until Friday 24 March 2017.

General debate

On Wednesday 18 January, MPs took part in a general debate and debated exiting the EU and security, law enforcement and criminal justice.

Opposition day debates

On Tuesday 17 January, MPs debated the effect of the UK leaving the EU on the rural economy, in the first of two debates to take place on subjects chosen by the Scottish national Party. The second Opposition debate was on effect of Department for Work and Pensions' policies on low income households.

Backbench Business debates

On Thursday 19 January in the Commons Chamber, MPs took part in two general debates which had been scheduled by the Backbench Business Committee.
