Lord Speaker welcomes Canadian justice minister and former PM

The Lord Speaker, Lord Fowler, welcomed the Hon. Jody Wilson-Raybould, Canadian minister of justice and attorney general and the Rt Hon. Kim Campbell, former prime minister of Canada to the House of Lords on Tuesday 4 July to mark the 150th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada.

Ms Wilson-Raybould and Ms Campbell reflected on Canadian history since Confederation, the story of Canada since Confederation and its future as a major international power and close partner of the United Kingdom.

Following their remarks, they took part in a panel discussion with the Lord Speaker and Lord Howell of Guildford, chair of the House of Lords International Relations Committee. The panel are discuss Canada’s key challenges and achievements at home and abroad, common misconceptions of the federation and look ahead to the future agenda.

The panel discussion was followed by questions from the audience, and a conclusion and thanks from Lord Howell.
