Members of the Lords, including a director of City and Suburban Investments Ltd and a former member of the Lords Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) Committee, debated the role that businesses, including SMEs, play in creating and spreading wealth, improving life chances, and contributing to the communities in which they operate, in the House of Lords on Thursday 6 July.

This was a general debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Lord Leigh of Hurley (Conservative), director of City and Suburban Investments Ltd.

Members taking part include:

  • Baroness Greengross (Crossbench), former director general of Age Concern England
  • Lord Mendelsohn (Labour), shadow Lords spokesperson for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy
  • Lord Palmer of Childs Hill (Liberal Democrat), former local councillor for Barnet Borough Council
  • Lord Popat (Conservative), former member of the Lords Small and Medium Sized Enterprises Committee

Viscount Younger of Leckie (Conservative), Lords government whip for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, responded on behalf of the government.
