Lords concludes Queen's Speech debate

Different subject areas were debated each day following State Opening. The debate lasted five sitting days after the day of the ceremony.

Three members of the Lords laid amendments for the debate. Amendments about the Queen's Speech give the House an opportunity to put on record its views on the government’s plans.

Baroness Hayter of Kentish Town (Labour) proposed an amendment calling on the government to seek a Brexit deal which will:

• prioritise jobs and the economy
• deliver the same benefits as the single market and customs union
• ensure no weakening in security and policing co-operation
• maintain existing rights of both EU nationals living in the UK and UK nationals living in the EU.

Following the debate, the amendment was not moved and so the change was not made.

Lord Adonis (Labour) proposed an amendment regretting that the Queen’s Speech contains no proposal for the government to seek continued membership of the European single market and customs union.

Following the debate, the amendment went to a division (a vote). 104 members of the Lords voted in favour of the amendment, while 172 voted against, therefore the change was not made.

Lord Armstrong of Ilminster (Crossbench) proposed an amendment calling on the government temporarily to suspend negotiations for leaving the European Union and to withdraw, for the time being, the UK’s notification of intention to leave under Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.

Following the debate, the amendment was not moved and so the change was not made.
