Lords debates UK development aid budget

Members of the Lords, including a former under-secretary in the Department for International Development and a former director of Oxfam UK, debated the case for measuring the impact of the UK's development aid budget, in the House of Lords on Monday 3 July.

This was a balloted debate. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Baroness D'Souza (Crossbench), founder and former director of the Relief and Development Institute.

Members taking part included:

  • Baroness Verma (Conservative), former parliamentary under-secretary in the Department for International Development
  • The Earl of Sandwich (Crossbench), former board member of Christian Aid
  • Lord Alderdice (Liberal Democrat), research associate in the Centre for International Studies, Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Oxford
  • Lord Judd (Labour), former director of Oxfam UK

Lord Bates (Conservative), minister in the Department for International Development, responded on behalf of the government.
