Members of the Lords, including a former director of the London School of Economics (LSE) and a council member of the Institute of Directors, debated the effect of globalisation, technology and demographic change on the future of work, and the public policy response to those changes, in the House of Lords on Thursday 12 October.

This was a balloted debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Lord Knight of Weymouth (Labour), trustee for the Centre for Accelerating Social Technology.

Members who took part included:

  • Lord Fox (Liberal Democrat), former local councillor
  • Lord Giddens (Labour), former director of the LSE
  • Baroness Wyld (Conservative), council member of the Institute of Directors

Baroness Wyld (Conservative), made her maiden speech.

Viscount Younger of Leckie (Conservative), government spokesperson, responded on behalf of the government.
