Monday 9 October

Second reading is the key debate on the purpose and principles of a bill (draft law).

Tuesday 10 October

Wednesday 11 October

Report stage is a further change to examine and make amendments (changes) to a bill.

Lords committees

In a packed week for House of Lords committees, there are three committee report debates in the chamber and 12 public evidence sessions.

Debates

Committees investigate broad, long-term issues and write reports on their findings. The reports are debated in the House of Lords and any member may take part. A member of the government must respond. The following select committee reports are scheduled to be debated this week.

Public evidence sessions

Committees meet people, organisations and government representatives during their investigations to question them and hear different viewpoints. The following committees have public meetings scheduled this week.

Thursday 12 October

  • European Union External Affairs Sub-Committee
  • European Union Internal Market Sub-Committee

Open inquiries

When a House of Lords committee conducts an inquiry it will often invite written evidence from interested parties. Have your say on the following inquiries currently seeking views:

Debates

During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns. The following topics are scheduled for debate this week:

  • Implementing the report from the Farmer Review

Thursday 12 October

  • The availability and affordability of housing
  • The effect of globalisation, technology and demographic change on the future of work
  • Assessment of progress made by the coalition government of Sri Lanka in meeting requirements of reconciliation established by the UN Human Rights Council
