The Joint Committee on Human Rights will question student and police representatives regarding the policing of the recent protests against a rise in tuition fees and education cuts.

MPs and Lords will ask questions in particular on the extent to which the Metropolitan Police Service has implemented recommendations by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary to ensure that the use of tactics such as containment (also known as kettling), and other uses of force when policing protest, are compatible with the requirements of human rights law.

Witnesses

At 12.30 pm

  • Simon Hardy, National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts.
  • Aaron Porter, National Union of Students.
  • Assistant Commissioner Chris Allison, Metropolitan Police Service.
  • Temporary Chief Constable Sue Sim, Northumbria Police, ACPO Public Order and Public Safety Lead.
