The House of Lords EU Sub-Committee on the Internal Market, Energy and Transport launched an inquiry into the EU single market by holding an evidence session with former EU Competition Commissioner Mario Monti.

Professor Monti is the author of A new Strategy for the Single Market a report commissioned by José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission and published in May this year.

The Committee decided to look in detail at the single market as the issue returns to the top of the policy agenda of EU leaders. The single market celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2012 and the European Commission is celebrating with a white paper on its re-launch. The single market has faced criticism in Europe since the financial crises for an alleged bias towards the Anglo-Saxon market model as opposed to the social market model operated in parts of mainland Europe.
