Chair of Communities and Local Government Committee elected

Following the elections for posts of the select Committee Chair on Wednesday 9 June, Mr Clive Betts MP has been elected by the house to be Chair of the Communities and Local Government Commitee.
Mr Mr Clive Betts MP will take up the position formally when the remaining members of the Committee are nominated by the House in the coming weeks.
Clive Betts said:
“I am delighted to have been elected. I was particularly pleased to have been nominated and elected by MPs from across the breadth of the House of Commons.
I believe this support came because of my knowledge and experience in local government, housing and planning, but also because I have always worked consensually and inclusively. I believe that the most influential Select Committee reports are those which provide a clear and evidenced analysis, and have the strongest cross party support.
In the challenging years ahead, I want the Committee to play its part in ensuring that central /local government relations do not revert to the damaging battles of the 1980s.
Given the cross party support for localism in various forms, I want the Select Committee’s inquiries to assist and enable sustainable, efficient and effective decentralisation, underpinned by a serious reform of local government finance.
I am also sure that the committee will want to be involved in trying to resolve the need to increase the supply of affordable homes, and gaining local support and funding to achieve this.”
