The Backbench Business Committee is responsible for scheduling debates on 35 days during the current session, at least 27 of which will be debates in the main Chamber of the House of Commons, with the remainder to be taken in Westminster Hall.

The Committee has determined that the following business will take place in backbench time:

Tuesday 30 November

Motion relating to Banking Reform (for approximately three hours)

A debate on a substantive motion relating to banking reform was suggested by Mr Michael Meacher, supported by Mr David Davis and Malcolm Bruce, as a subject of national importance and of great public interest.

General Debate on Regulation of Independent Financial Advisors.

A debate on regulation of independent financial advisors was suggested by Harriett Baldwin and Mark Garnier. The Committee chose this subject because there is significant support from backbench Members for a debate on this topical issue.

Thursday 2 December

Motion relating to the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA).

There is a high level of support amongst backbench Members from both sides of the House for a debate on this subject. The Committee heard oral representations, led by Adam Afriyie, on three occasions and received written representations in support of a debate from over 40 Members.
