Immigration to be debated on 18 November

The Backbench Business Committee is responsible for scheduling debates on 35 days during the current session, at least 27 of which will be debates in the main Chamber of the House of Commons, with the remainder to be taken in Westminster Hall.

The Committee has determined that the following business will take place in backbench time:

 

Thursday 11 November in Westminster Hall

 Impact of the Comprehensive Spending Review on the Department of Health.

 The Committee chose this subject because there is significant support from backbench Members for a wide-ranging debate on the effects of reductions in expenditure on the work of the Department, including representations to debate health matters from Grahame M. Morris.

 

Thursday 18 November

 Motion relating to Immigration, to be tabled by Nicholas Soames and Mr Frank Field.

 A debate on a substantive motion relating to immigration was suggested by Nicholas Soames and Mr Frank Field. The Committee chose this subject because it was put forward on a cross-party basis and deals with a subject of public concern which has not been debated on the floor of the House on a substantive motion in recent times.

 

Thursday 18 November in Westminster Hall

 2010 UN Climate Change Conference, Cancun (for up to 2 hours), followed by a debate on Houses in Multiple Occupation.

The debate on the 2010 UN Climate Change Conference, Cancun, which opens on 29 November, was suggested to the Committee by Duncan Hames and Charlotte Leslie and is highly topical.

 The debate on Houses in Multiple Occupation was suggested by Nicky Morgan and addresses a subject of wide interest across the House.
