The House of Lords Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment questioned two senior figures from US Government departments as part of its Inquiry into Innovation in EU Agriculture on Wednesday 1 December.

Dr Roger Beachy, Chief Scientist at the US Department of Agriculture and Director of its National Institute for Food and Agriculture; and Jack Bobo, Senior Advisor on Biotechnology at the US Department of State, gave evidence to the Inquiry via video link.

The aim of the inquiry is to identify how innovation in EU agriculture can be best supported, particularly at a time when factors such as population increase and climate change have greatly affected the scale of the challenges facing agriculture in the UK, Europe and globally.

The Committee is keen to hear from countries outside the EU to learn about alternative approaches and examples of innovation which might be relevant in a Europe-wide context.
