Lords Committee received evidence on the EU Police Mission in Afghanistan

The House of Lords EU Sub Committee for Foreign Affairs, Defence and Development Policy took evidence as part of its inquiry into the EU’s Police Mission in Afghanistan from Fatima Ayub, of the Open Society Foundation.
The Committee questioned Ms Ayub, a specialist on security sector reform in Afghanistan, on subjects such as how the current timescale for the withdrawal of US, UK & NATO forces affects the effectiveness of the EU Police Mission (EUPOL), the challenges faced by the Afghan National Police and how effective they are in the protection of Afghan citizens, and potential obstacles faced by EUPOL in fulfilling its mandate.
Other areas of questioning also included international initiatives for reform of the security sector and EUPOL’s relationship with the Afghan government.
The evidence session took place at 10:05am on Thursday 14 October in Committee Room 2A of the House of Lords.
