Lords Committee questioned the former Head of the EU's Afghan Police Mission

The House of Lords EU Sub Committee for Foreign Affairs, Defence and Development Policy took evidence on Thursday 21 October, as part of its inquiry into the EU's Police Mission in Afghanistan (EUPOL), from Chief Superintendant Nigel Thomas, former interim Head of the EU Police Mission in Afghanistan (EUPOL).
The Committee asked the former Head of the Mission about what contributions the mission had made to improve the security of Afghanistan, what operational and political challenges are faced by EUPOL, including relations with other international players and the Afghan Government, and how the effectiveness of the mission might be improved.
The Committee also found out from Nigel Thomas what attention is being paid to building an effective, non corrupt judiciary in Afghanistan, and what factors affect the effectiveness of the Afghan police - from infiltration by the Taliban and Al Qaeda, to low literacy and drug taking.
The evidence session took place at 10:05am on Thursday 21 October in Committee Room 2A of the House of Lords.
