Meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister

Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, gave evidence to the Committee on 13 October in a new annual evidence session covering constitutional issues.
The Committee questioned Mr Clegg on a range of issues including:
- His role as Deputy Prime Minister and the principles behind the Government’s proposals for constitutional reform.
- The Government’s proposals for fixed-term Parliaments – including why the Fixed-term Parliaments Bill was not subject to pre-legislative scrutiny.
- Reform of the House of Lords and what Mr Clegg sees as the proper role and functions of an effective second chamber and why an elected chamber would perform these roles more effectively.
- The proposal for a referendum on voting reform for the electoral system in general elections.
