Following its hearing with Robert Chote on the16 September 2010, the Treasury Committee has agreed that it is satisfied that Robert Chote has the professional competence and personal independence required to be Chair of the Office for Budget Responsibility.

Andrew Tyrie, Chairman of the Committee, said:

I am delighted that Robert Chote is to chair the permanent OBR. He is very well qualified professionally for the post, having demonstrated his independence of mind and expertise during his time at the Institute of Fiscal Studies. An OBR along the lines proposed in the Committee’s Report, to be released next week, and led by Robert, has every prospect of adding to the quality of public debate on fiscal policy.
