Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Director of The Earth Institute, Columbia University, will give evidence to the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee today as part of its inquiry into the Impact and Effectiveness of Development Aid.

Issues

The Committee will question the author of "The End of Poverty" about the role that aid plays in helping some of the world’s poorest countries out of poverty, how it is possible for aid to be designed to avoid undermining political accountability and the relationship between aid and private sector investment in under developed countries.

Professor Sachs will also face questions about the British government's aid commitments, the role of NGOs and the key lessons that have emerged from research on aid in conflict-prone and fragile states.

The evidence session will start at 3.35pm, Tuesday 6 December in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
