Students have their say: Lords hear from NUS President

This will be the third evidence session in the Committee’s inquiry into what contribution the EU can make to boost mobility, provide funding for and promote best practice across Europe’s higher education sector.

• Liam Burns, President of the National Union of Students

The NUS is the national voice of students and is a voluntary membership confederation of 600 students’ unions, which constitutes more than 95 per cent of all higher and further education unions in the UK.

The Committee will question Mr. Burns on issues including:

• if he thinks the Government is doing enough to support Erasmus opportunities in the UK;
•  what the benefits of the Bologna Process have been for UK students and whether the social dimension is more important than the academic dimension;
• whether he agrees with the Commission’s emphasis on encouraging closer collaboration between EU higher education institutions and business; and
• whether he supports the proposed ‘U-Multirank’ universities ranking tool or if he thinks it would place further burdens on higher education institutions.
