Purpose of session:
This is the first session of the Committee’s inquiry and provides an opportunity to question UK-based organisations on how organised crime originating in Turkey currently affects the UK, and the impact of recent EU enlargements on organised crime in the UK.

Committee Chair's comments:
Committee Chairman, Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP, said:
“Turkey’s admission to the EU will make it the second largest Member State, with a population of over 70 million. It is essential that all of the lessons of previous enlargements are learnt before and not after it becomes a member. The Committee looks forward to examining in detail the issues that are of concern to the public, including migration, people trafficking and drugs trafficking. We are particularly concerned about reports of illegal immigration flooding over the Greek-Turkish border.”
