Oliver Letwin to face Lords science committee

The House of Lords Science and Technology Sub-Committee will ask the Government to justify its use of ‘nudge’ principles, given the limited evidence that ‘nudging’ works. It will probe the Government on what it is doing in particular in the health and transport sectors.

The Sub-Committee is expected to raise particular questions over how ‘nudge’ policies are evaluated, and whether local authorities, who are charged with delivering health and transport services to local people, are equipped to put the Government’s visions on ‘nudging’ into practice.

It is also expected to investigate concerns raised in previous evidence sessions that the Government is failing to take relevant research adequately into account in designing its policies on behaviour change.

The evidence session will take place at in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.

The House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology is conducting an inquiry into the use of behaviour change interventions as a means of achieving government policy goals. The investigation includes the policy implications of recent developments in research on behaviour change; whether current government behaviour change interventions are evidence-based and subject to appropriate evaluation; and the relationship between government, industry and the voluntary sector in promoting behaviour change.
