Oral Evidence Session

Police Bail
Tuesday 05 July 2011 at 12.10 pm
Committee Room 8

Purpose of session:

This emergency session provides an opportunity to explore the practical consequences for the police of the recent court judgment that the time suspects spend on police bail counts towards the maximum period of detention without charge.

Committee Chair Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP said:

“Police Forces across the country have been in limbo following this judgement. It is essential that they are given guidance not only by ACPO, who have been successfully filling in the gap, but also by the Home Secretary through emergency legislation.

I look forward to asking ACPO about the consequences of this judgement and what they think emergency legislation should include”.

Witnesses:

At 12.10 pm
• Jim Barker-McCardle, Chief Constable of Essex
• Commander Steve Bloomfield, Metropolitan Police
