EU Select Committee hears evidence from Ambassador of the Republic of Poland; and Minister for Europe

The House of Lords European Union Committee heard evidence from H. E. Ms Barbara Tuge-Erecinska, Ambassador of Poland; Jacek Gajewski, 1st Counsellor, Head of Political Section; and Ms Iwona Woicka-Zulawska, Counsellor, Head of Economic Section, Embassy of Poland on Tuesday 19 July.
The Committee asked the Ambassador about the Polish Presidency priorities, including:
- The Commission's recent proposals on revitalising the European Neighbourhood policy;
- The forthcoming Durban summit on climate change; and
- Negotiations on the EU Budget 2012
Following this session, the Committee will also heard evidence from the Rt Hon David Lidington MP, Minister for Europe; and Simon Manley, Director EU Directorate, Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
The Committee's session focused on the European Council of 24 June, and the conclusions from that meeting. Areas covered in the Committee's questioning included:
- The European Semester;
- The possibility of a "new momentum" in the European perspective of the Western Balkans countries cited in the European Council conclusions;
- Icelandic accession to the EU; ad
- The General Affairs Council
