Oral Evidence Session

Restorative Justice
Tuesday 21 June 2011 at 12.00 noon
Committee Room 15

Purpose of session:

The Chair heard a presentation about Norfolk’s restorative justice programme during a visit to Norman Lamb MP’s constituency on 4 June. He thought it would be useful for the Committee to take formal evidence from Norfolk representatives in relation to the Committee’s ongoing interest in effective spending in the criminal justice system.

Witnesses:

At 12.00 noon
• Councillor Brian Hannah, Norfolk County Council Champion for Restorative Justice
• Sergeant Andy Smith, Norfolk Constabulary
• Carey Cake, Children's Services Officer, Norfolk County Council

Committee Chair Rt hon Keith Vaz MP said:

“Restorative processes bring victims of crime into communication with the perpetrators. Offenders should understand the real impact of their crime; take responsibility for their actions; and make amends. Norfolk is a prime example of the success restorative justice practices can bring, being used by police and teachers.”
