PASC to hear from think tanks and Cabinet Office on Big Society

This will be the Committee’s second evidence session of its Inquiry into the Big Society and will focus on the role of government in enabling the development of the Big Society. In the light of the Prime Minister’s statement that the Government’s plans to “modernise public services are more significant aspects of our Big Society agenda than the work we're doing to boost social action”, the Committee will explore what this might mean in practice, and what impact this could have on accountability and equity of service provision.
Particular issues that may arise include:
- Whether the Big Society can be achieved through government action;
- the work being carried out by the Cabinet Office to coordinate the Big Society agenda across government;
- commissioning capacity in the Civil Service; and
- the role of profit-making companies in delivering public services.
