NSPCC gives evidence in Lords 'Rights of the Child' scrutiny session

Naureen Khan, European Advisor for the National Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), appeared before the House of Lords EU Sub-Committee on Social Policies and Consumer Protection.

Her appearance follows last week's evidence session with children's rights expert Marie Staunton of Plan UK and the EU's Fundamental Rights Agency. The session highlighted the fact that, although the EU has taken significant steps in considering children's issues, they have not proved successful in actioning many of the ideas that have been discussed.

Naureen faced questions from the committee on topics including:
- whether the EU has put in place a realistic framework to address its weaknesses, including a lack of organisational capacity and non-existence of a child rights framework
- how the Commission might collect pertinent data that will help it assess the impact of its legislation upon children
- how the EU's Forum for the Rights of the Child would be best used in order to boost its impact
The evidence sessions are part of the committee's on-going routine scrutiny work on the EU Agenda for the Rights of the Child.
