The Backbench Business Committee is responsible for scheduling debates on 35 days during the current session, at least 27 of which will be debates in the main Chamber of the House of Commons, with the remainder to be taken in Westminster Hall.

The Committee has determined that the following business will take place in backbench time:

Thursday 9 June in Westminster Hall

Take-up of apprenticeships by small businesses (Member in charge: Richard Graham)

This date became available at short notice. The Backbench Business Committee heard that a number of Members wished to participate in a debate on ways to encourage more small businesses to take on apprentices.

Thursday 16 June in Westminster Hall

Student visas (Member in charge: Paul Blomfield)

The Committee was told that a debate on the implementation of the Government’s proposals for tier 4 visa applications would be timely and had widespread support amongst backbench Members from both sides of the House.

Thursday 23 June in Westminster Hall

Private finance initiative (Member in charge: Jesse Norman)

A large number of backbench Members indicated to the Backbench Business Committee their support for a debate on the operation of the private finance initiative.
