Purpose of session:

The Committee took evidence from Trevor Phillips, Chair of the Equalities and Human Rights Commission, and Lynne Featherstone, Minister for Equalities and Criminal Information, in January 2011 about the focus and delivery structure of the Government’s equalities agenda, following the transfer of the equalities remit to the Home Office in 2010.

In this second evidence session Members will have the opportunity to examine these issues with a number of stakeholders in the equalities field, as well as raise topical policy issues relating to equalities and home affairs.

Witnesses:

At 11.30 a.m.
• Ben Summerskill, Chief Executive, Stonewall
• Dr Marc Bush, Head of Public Policy, Scope
• Leander Necko, Board member, Equanomics-UK

Committee Chair, Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP, said:

“The Government will shortly set out its intentions for reform of the Equality and Human Rights Commission. We are keen to hear the views of communities who may be affected by such changes, as well as their assessment of recent progress towards more equality of treatment in the criminal justice system.”
