The Backbench Business Committee is responsible for scheduling debates on 35 days during the current session, at least 27 of which will be debates in the main Chamber of the House of Commons, with the remainder to be taken in Westminster Hall.
The Committee has determined that the following business will take place in backbench time:
Thursday 28 April in Westminster Hall
Debate on Sudan (Member in charge: Mr Tom Clarke).
The Committee heard that backbench Members wished to debate issues relating to humanitarian assistance, conflict and debt in Sudan and the wider region following the recent referendum in Sudan.
Arrangements for the pre-recess Adjournment debate: Tuesday 5 April
The Backbench Business Committee has received notice from 21 Members that they wish to take part in the half day pre-Easter debate on Tuesday 5 April. The Committee has grouped these Members and subjects into two parts, as follows:
-
Issues relating to the Department for Work and Pensions
-
General Debate
Four Members have indicated they wish to raise subjects for which the Department for Work and Pensions is responsible. A Minister from the Department will be invited to respond to the issues raised. This part of the debate is expected to last for approximately 45 minutes.
The second part of the debate will enable Members to raise any other subjects. The Deputy Leader of the House is expected to reply to this general debate. The Committee expects each Member to receive a substantive written reply from the department to the points raised unless they are dealt with fully in the Deputy Leader of the House’s reply.
The names of those Members who have indicated to the Committee that they wish to participate in the debate are listed below along with the subject they wish to raise. The speaking order will be decided by the occupant of the Chair on the day.
