How well does Government use IT?

This will be the Committee’s second evidence session of its Inquiry into the Government’s use of IT. The first panel, with industry representatives, will focus on how government interacts with the IT industry; covering issues such as the supplier base, procurement, skills, and relations between industry and government. This session will be held on 15 March 2011 in Committee Room 21.
The second panel, with advocates of new approaches to IT, will focus on how the government could use IT to transform delivery of public services. It will also examine the possibility of making greater use of agile development, open sources and open standards, and cloud computing by the government.
Particular issues that may arise include:
- How to realise the government’s ambition to award more contracts to SMEs;
- Whether procurement rules are in need of reform;
- How IT should be involved in the policy development process; and
- How the government could adopt new technologies and ways of working such as open source, open standards, agile development, and cloud computing.
