Lord Carlile to be questioned on Pre-Charge Detention Legislation

Lord Carlile of Berriew, the former independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, was questioned on Tuesday 29 March by a Joint Committee of MPs and Peers about pre-charge detention legislation
The Committee is examining the draft Detention of Terrorist Suspects Bills and asked Lord Carlile for his views on the Government’s proposal to reduce the time available for pre-charge detention to 14 days but to use the draft Bills to increase it to 28 days in an emergency.
On the same day, the Committee also received evidence from two civil liberties and human rights groups, JUSTICE and Liberty. Dr Eric Metcalfe, from JUSTICE, and Ms Isabella Sankey, from Liberty, was questioned about their opinions on the proposed safeguards for those held without charge, and the circumstances the draft legislation might be used in.
