Home Secretary questioned on pre-charge detention

A Joint Committee of MPs and Peers questioned Theresa May on Monday 16 May about the Government’s proposal to reduce the time available for pre-charge detention to 14 days and to use draft Bills to increase it to 28 days in an emergency.
The Committee aims to establish what the Government hopes to achieve with the proposals, and whether the draft bills would achieve the Government’s aims. The Committee also enquired into the circumstances under which the Home Secretary envisages needing to use the emergency powers.
