The Backbench Business Committee is responsible for scheduling debates on 35 days during the current session, at least 27 of which will be debates in the main Chamber of the House of Commons, with the remainder to be taken in Westminster Hall
The Committee has determined that the following business will take place in backbench time:
Tuesday 24 May in the Chamber
Motion relating to the Eurozone financial assistance (Members in charge: Mark Reckless and Jim Shannon) (for up to two hours).
The Committee heard that this was a topical issue in light of the ECOFIN meeting on 17 May and that backbench Members from both sides of the House supported a debate.
General debate on matters to be raised before the forthcoming adjournment (for approximately four hours).
The Backbench Business Committee has received notice from 20 Members that they wish to take part in the pre-recess debate on Tuesday 24 May. The Committee has decided to allow up to four hours for this debate and has grouped these Members and subjects into three parts, as follows:
-
Issues relating to the Ministry of Justice
-
Issues relating to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
-
General Debate
For the first two parts, a Minister from the department will be invited to respond to the issues raised. The second part of the debate will enable Members to raise any other subjects. The Deputy Leader of the House is expected to reply to this general debate. The Committee expects each Member to receive a substantive written reply from the department to the points raised unless they are dealt with fully in the Deputy Leader of the House’s reply.
Members should expect to speak for six to eight minutes and Ministers for not more than 10 minutes. The names of those Members who have indicated to the Committee that they wish to participate in the debate are listed below along with the subject they wish to raise. The speaking order will be decided by the occupant of the Chair on the day.
