Police chiefs questioned on pre-charge detention periods

John Yates, Assistant Commissioner and Head of Counter Terrorism, Metropolitan Police (pictured) will be among the police chiefs questioned by a joint committee of MPs and Members of the Lords this afternoon (Tuesday 10 May) about how long suspected terrorists should be able to be detained for prior to charging and how contingency plans to extend beyond 14 days should be designed.

The senior police officers appearing before the Committee are:
- Sir Hugh Orde, President of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO)
- John Yates, Assistant Commissioner and Head of Counter Terrorism, Metropolitan Police
- Drew Harris, Assistant Chief Constable, Police Service in Northern Ireland.
The Police Service in Northern Ireland will be asked about the lessons that can be learned from experiences in Northern Ireland.
The Joint Committee on the Draft Detention of Terrorist Suspects (Temporary Extension) Bills remit is to consider two draft Bills on pre-charge detention, published by the Home Office on 11 February 2011.
The Committee must report by 9 June 2011.
