Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council questioned on new grant assessment regime

Professor David Delpy, Chief Executive of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and John Armitt, Chairman of the EPSRC, appear before the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee on Tuesday 29 November in a one-off evidence session looking at the proposed changes to the EPSRC grant assessment regime.
The EPSRC are proposing changes to their current peer review process so that, in line with their "shaping capability" agenda, "national importance" will be added to international excellence as a criterion for assessing grant applications.

The Committee will question them on issues such as:
- why the ESPRC is introducing this new way of assessing grant applications
- who decides which research proposals are of "National importance" and against what criteria
- what concerns have been raised about their "shaping capabilities" initiative and how they have responded to them
