10 November 2011
Professor Malcolm Chalmers, Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) Director of UK Defence Policy and War Studies Professor at Kings College will give evidence to the Lords EU Sub-Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Development inquiry into European security and EU military capabilities, on Thursday 10 November.
- Parliament TV: Foreign Affairs, Defence and Development Policy
- Inquiry: Military capabilities available to the EU
- EU Sub-Committee C - Foreign Affairs, Defence and Development Policy
The committee will ask about the security challenges Europe faces, and whether the EU is equipped to deal with them.
It is expected to explore such questions as:
- what should the EU's role be in addressing threats to European security? Are existing policies working?
- what does the intervention in Libya mean for future EU military operations? What security capabilities does the EU need? Should it establish an Operational Headquarters from which to run missions? Are the EU's battlegroups useful?
- can the EU and NATO ever be made to co-operate properly?
Professor Anand Menon, an expert on EU security policy from the University of Birmingham, will also give evidence.
The evidence session will take place at 10.05am in Committee Room 2A of the House of Lords.
