The Joint Committee on the Draft House of Lords Reform Bill hears evidence from Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury followed by representatives of the British Humanist Association and religious think-tank THEOS.

Witnesses

The evidence sessions will take place on Monday 28 November in the Moses Room of the House of Lords:

  • 6 00 pm. – Most Rev and Rt Hon Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury
  • 6.45 pm (approx)– Andrew Copson, Chief Executive, the British Humanist Association, and Elizabeth Hunter, Director, Theos

Issues

The committee will ask the Archbishop for his views on the draft Bill. It is expected to question him on why Church of England Bishops should be retained in a reformed House, whether and how other faiths should be represented among appointed members of a reformed House, and why he is sceptical about the need for an elected second chamber of Parliament.

After hearing from the Archbishop the Committee will take evidence from Andrew Copson, Chief Executive of the British Humanist Association and Elizabeth Hunter, Director of THEOS. They are expected to be questioned on their views on the Draft Bill and the role of faith representatives in Parliament.
