Independently minded? Lords question Chief Scientific Advisers experts on their roles

Chief Scientific Advisers (CSAs) from the Treasury and the Ministry of Defence will appear before the Lords Science and Technology Committee on Tuesday 15 November, as part of their inquiry into the role of the Government's CSAs.

At 10.40am, the Committee will hear from:
- Dr James Richardson, CSA, Her Majesty’s Treasury (HMT)
- Professor Sir Mark Welland, CSA, Ministry of Defence (MoD)
Following on, at 11.35am, the Committee will question Lord May of Oxford, former Government Chief Scientific Adviser.
Issues
The committee is expected to explore issues such as
- how the role of the CSA has changed over time
- how CSAs can provide independent advice and what the key ways are of ensuring that Government policy is informed by scientific advice
- what the advantages and disadvantages are of the CSA role being an internal or external appointment.
The evidence sessions will take place from10.40am in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords.
