Communications Committee to question Jeremy Hunt

Culture Secretary Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP and 24 hour news channels will face questions from the Lords Communications Committee on Tuesday 29 November when it continues its investigation into what the future of investigative journalism looks like.

  • Mr Chris Birkett, Deputy Head of News, Sky News
  • Mr Al Anstey, Managing Editor, Al Jazeera
  • Mr Diarmuid Jeffreys, Senior Programme Editor, Al Jazeera

In the first session, at 3.30 pm, Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport will be asked about issues such as:

  • Whether the ownership of a news organisation influences the type of investigative journalism it conducts
  • Whether the Government can do anything to encourage more investigative journalism at local and national levels
  • How the Government’s plans for local TV might effect investigative journalism at a local level

In the second session witnesses will be asked questions about the nature of investigative journalism in 24 hour news reporting. The broadcasters will be asked about the challenges involved in undertaking investigative stories for a news channel, the use of undercover filming, and the verification of sources.
